How YouTube handles work

YouTube handles are unique @usernames for channels. Checking availability first helps you avoid an invalid handle or one that is already taken.

  • Handles are 3 to 30 characters

YouTube handles must be at least 3 characters and at most 30 characters long, not counting the @.

  • Letters, numbers, periods, hyphens, and underscores

Spaces, emoji, and other symbols are not allowed. Handles are not case-sensitive for claiming.

  • No punctuation at the start or end

A handle cannot begin or end with a period, hyphen, or underscore.

  • Available does not mean reserved forever

If a handle looks available, claim it soon. Popular handles can be taken quickly, and YouTube may still reserve some names.

Frequently asked questions

Type the handle without the @, then click Check availability. This tool validates YouTube handle rules and looks up whether a public channel already uses it.
